Husband Down!

A husband and wife are shopping in their local supermarket.

The husband picks up a case of beer and puts it in their trolley.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife.

'They're on sale, only $15 for 24 cans he replies.

'Put them back, we can't afford them' demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.

A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a $30 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband.

'It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.

Her husband retorts: 'So does 24 cans of beer and it's half the price.'

He never knew what hit him.

And now you can read our latest news in the post below ......

It Is Summer Time

Any further rain which was predicted over the weekend failed to arrive. We had clear skies and northerly winds. The temp hovered in the low 30's over much of Sunday making the pool the place to be.

Friday night attendance at drinks was down but that didn't seem to impact on the enjoyment. Ian and his wife kerry dropped around and we had a great night, possibly a little too good a night for Trish. She crashed early leaving me alone to watch a bit of TV. Trish had a quiet Saturday!

I went to Computer Club as per normal on Saturday and again dealt with a range of problems for members. We managed to solve most of them and had generally happy customers at the end of it. I took Ian with me and after I got him home I switched his anti-virus across to NOD32 which I think he will be happy with.

Most of the weekend was spent switching between cricket and golf on TV in the lounge room and then popping out into the pool for a refreshing swim.

New neighbours moved in to the house on the right as you face our home. They are a young couple with two boys. He is a former soldier who now works 'in the mines' out of Gladstone. He works 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. Gladstone is around 400k's north of the Sunshine Coast and is a major centre for the huge mining boom Queensland is experiencing right now. The mines is where the good money is to be made right now. They seem very nice. He is the first person living there in the last 5 years who owns a lawn mower!

I bike rode on Sunday and today with the pool being 27.5 degrees this morning.

Later in the morning I spent an hour delivering Community Association newsletters. The pool is beckoning right now as I type.

Cooler wet weather is expected after lunch on Thursday which just happens to be the first day of the first cricket test against New Zealand to be played in Brisbane.

Dummies guide to what went wrong in Europe. (And USA)

Helga is the proprietor of a bar.

She realizes that virtually all of her customers are unemployed alcoholics and, as such, can no longer afford to patronize her bar.

To solve this problem, she comes up with a new marketing plan that allows her customers to drink now, but pay later.

Helga keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting loans to the customers).

Word gets around about Helga's "drink now, pay later" marketing strategy and, as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Helga's bar.

Soon she has the largest sales volume for any bar in town.

By providing her customers freedom from immediate payment demands, Helga gets no resistance when, at regular intervals, she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most consumed beverages.

Consequently, Helga's gross sales volume increases massively.

A young and dynamic vice-president at the local bank recognizes that these customer debts constitute valuable future assets and increases Helga's borrowing limit.

He sees no reason for any undue concern, since he has the debts of the unemployed alcoholics as collateral!!!

At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert traders figure a way to make huge commissions, and transform these customer loans into DRINK BONDS.

These "securities" then are bundled and traded on international securities markets.

Naive investors don't really understand that the securities being sold to them as "AA" "Secured Bonds" really are debts of unemployed alcoholics.

Nevertheless, the bond prices continuously climb!!!, and the securities soon become the hottest-selling items for some of the nation's leading brokerage houses.

One day, even though the bond prices still are climbing, a risk manager at the original local bank decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Helga's bar.

He so informs Helga. Helga then demands payment from her alcoholic patrons, but being unemployed alcoholics they cannot pay back their drinking debts..

Since Helga cannot fulfil her loan obligations she is forced into bankruptcy. The bar closes and Helga's 11 employees lose their jobs.

Overnight, DRINK BOND prices drop by 90%. The collapsed bond asset value destroys the bank's liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans, thus freezing credit and economic activity in the community.

The suppliers of Helga's bar had granted her generous payment extensions and had invested their firms' pension funds in the BOND securities.

They find they are now faced with having to write off her bad debt and with losing over 90% of the presumed value of the bonds..

Her wine supplier also claims bankruptcy, closing the doors on a family business that had endured for three generations, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local plant and lays off 150 workers.

Fortunately though, the bank, the brokerage houses and their respective executives are saved and bailed out by a multibillion dollar no-strings attached cash infusion from the government.

The funds required for this bailout are obtained by new taxes levied on employed, middle-class, non-drinkers who’ve never been in Helga’s bar.

Now do you understand?

Water Diverter Wasn't Required After All

By the time the rain clouds had cleared from our area sometime early this morning it turned out we hadn't needed the water diverter after all to ensure the water level in the pool was topped up. The pool is now full and there are 77mls of rain in the gauge. The 3+" of rain we have had would have been enough to fill the pool without even contemplating using the water diverter at all.

After a fall of rain like that I usually don't bother to ride. The pathways usually have seepage over them which means you get spray all over your back and water splashes all over the rest of you. I did do around 12k's this morning on the bike and there wasn't one spot where any overnight water could be seen.

I guess it was so dry the water just soaked straight in! Our front lawn looks terrible. The areas of grass which are alive are a bright vibrant green this morning while the rest looks a dirty dead yellow color. Let us see what it looks like in a few days time.

With all that rain it is very humid right now, somewhere around 85%. This should lower as the day progresses and the surface water dries out. The pool looks OK though, it is a little under 27 degrees in there right now.

More rain is expected tomorrow.

I thought the joke below was quite clever!

Job Interview

Rain At Last

It took until Thursday mid morning but the promised rain has begun falling at last. It has been raining for around 90 minutes now and there are around 15mls in the rain gauge. Wednesday evening saw us get a minimal sprinkle, enough to wet the pavers but they were all dry again 5 minutes later. Brisbane got 1 ml yesterday afternoon while 50k's to the south west of the city they had well over 50mls.

With all this rain around it has been pretty sticky too. But right now it is gray, there is rain on the rooftops and it has cooled down considerably. The house is wide open allowing the cooler air to penetrate.

The last time we got any reasonable rain was mid October when we had 22mls. We had 6 mls around 4 weeks ago but nothing since.

The water diverter is now helping to top the pool up and it is almost 'there'. It was probably down almost 3 or 4 inches from the level it should be when it is 'full'. With it being so dry there was heaps of dust and dirt on the roof. This is what first goes through the diverter. I actually had to clean the diverter and the connections out as mud was restricting the flow somewhat. All is running well right now though.

I have getting my bike ride in each day and still maintaining around 12 or so kilometres each day.

On Tuesday we went to Maroochydore where Trish wanted some stuff for the Arts centre association. I bought another 'backup' cable for my recliner so I have a spare now. On Wednesday I assisted with the newsletter which I am handing over to another Committee member. He did most of the work but I finished it off. We will collect it on Friday so it can be distributed across the estate by volunteer deliverers.

I bottled another brew on Wednesday afternoon before a swim later in the afternoon. The pool is around 28 degrees most afternoons so it is delightful to have a quick dip and then sit poolside with a cooling frothy top in hand!

This morning a Community Association delegation visited the local Helicopter Training School for a chat and an update.

But today's rain is delightful, you can almost feel the air outside has been cleansed!

Finally we have watched a couple of decent movies. Last night we watched 50/50 about a young guy with cancer. We followed that with "The Debt", a thriller with Helen Mirren centred around a bungled Mossad raid. On Tuesday night we watched "The Help" which was excellent too.

It is approaching Academy Awards times so some movies marked "For Awards Consideration Only" are doing the rounds right now.

Possibly Some Rain Wednesday

It is now more than 5 weeks since we had any rain over 5 or 6 mls in a day. So far no rain at all has been recorded in November. But the forecast is telling us that we can expect 'periods of rain' on Thursday. We sure need it.

Every four days or so I need to top the pool up just a little to ensure the water level is high enough for the pool's skimmer box (and the filter pump) to work. The water diverter connected to a down pipe is turned on and the hose is poised above the skimmer box ready to pour any rain water into the pool!

The front lawn is yellow and crinkles under my feet as I walk on it. The pots get a small water from time to time to give any plants a 'drink' to keep them alive.

I have watched heaps of golf the last few day with the Presidents Cup live and in full on PayTV. Then of course once 6pm comes, there is live Test Cricket from South Africa where Australia is currently playing.

I did the Computer Club on Saturday which was as busy as usual. I washed bottles ready for my next bottling sometime this week and they are now ready to go.

Last night 8 of us ventured to the very local Indian restaurant for their $30 per head banquet. It was a huge success with everyone enjoying the food and having heaps to eat. Despite giving my home brew and red wine a 'nudge' last night I am moving very well this morning. I even got my 12 kilometre bike ride over and done by 7:45 am. It was nearly 26 degrees in the pool when I had a refreshing swim afterwards.

I see Pat and Graeme are safely back from their trip to the UK. Skype gives me reminders that they are 'online'. We will get all the news when we catch up with them on our next trip to Melbourne mid December. I have also heard from my brother that they will be visiting us New Year's Eve and will collect us from Maroochydore Airport when we fly back in after Christmas.

Great Deal On The Internet

As most of you know I spend more than several hours most days messing around on my PC. One of my first group of pages I visit is some selected "Daily Specials" websites.

Just "Google" these websites if you want to check any of them out or click on the links. They have new specials most days and all accept payment via "Paypal". I won't include a couple of other sites I get specials from as well but just note them as the ever popular eBay and my DealExtreme websites. I also like the Australian based "Umart" as they have an agency here on the coast where it is easy for me pick stuff up.

The sites I visit are "Catch Of The Day", "Zazz", "OO", "Ozbargain" "eSold" "Spreets" and "Shopping Square". There are more too such as Daily Deals etc.

If you Google Ozbargain you will get links to sub categories Electrical & Computer which I have listed in my "Favorites".

I like to listen to my radio in bed and have been wearing 'bud' earphones. Nowadays there is a newer kind of bud earphone which are very comfortable to wear. I decided I would like a set of the newer more comfortable headphones.

The little bit of online hunting around I did seemed to show that possibly a pair of "Logitech Ultimate Ears 200's" would be a reasonable choice. Officeworks have them in the current catalogue HERE at $29 per pair. Ozbargain had a link (HERE) to the "Logitech Shop" and their Christmas sale. They were selling UE 200's at 2 pairs for $12. They are plain wrapped but 'new'. This price included delivery.

I ordered 2 pairs for $12 on Sunday and they were delivered yesterday.

Summer Arrives

It has been warm here the last day or so. I have moved on from T-Shirts to Singlets and you are correct, it's not a pretty sight! Temps have been nudging 30 degrees the last day or so. As I have said previously, the hottest time of the day here is around 11 am, just before the sea-breeze comes in. Overnights have been in the low 20's. This morning I swam after my bike ride around 8 am with the pool temp 26+ and the air temp in our sheltered little back yard about 28 degrees.

As the photo shows, there is hardly a cloud in the sky. The photo was taken before 7 am this morning and shows the new development here with over 700 home sites to be built in the next few years. And there isn't a cloud in the sky.

There is still no rain on the outlook and giving the pool a little top up happens every second day or so. I was in the pool on 3 separate occasions yesterday. Remember you can click on one photo to see larger views of all photos in one post. Click on the cross in the top right hand corner to return to this page.

I continue to have a ball with the new WD TV Live Streaming Media Player. I have discovered 'Movie Sheets' and a program called "Thumbgen". Now when I click on a movie to play there is a synopsis of the story, the major actors, the duration and the latest IMDB rating. In the background is a screenshot from the movie as you can see on the photo left. I am enjoying messing around with it very much.

Tuesday we headed into the RSL for a $5 per person lunch. The RSL is not renowned for its meals so we were a little wary. It was basic 'pub fare' but not a bad sized meal at all for $5. I was planning on grabbing 2 lunches if they were smaller serves but I couldn't have eaten two serves.

You can see 'my' recliner chair in the photo left. I had again broken the cable (that is at least 3 times now) which runs from the handle to the release mechanism which extends the recliner. Previously I would ring a guy who would come and replace the cable for me at around $60 a pop. I called him a few times, sent him a couple of texts all without an answer.

The repair guy had previously told me they were straight forward to replace. I hadn't heard from him so I guessed he was no longer in business. I popped in to a local furniture store to check out where I might be able to buy a new cable. The guy gave me a cable, not exactly the same as the original but he believed it might work. I replaced the broken cable and "bingo", it works. That is another $60 I have saved!

Last night we watched an older movie called "A Time To Kill". It told the story of a negro father who shot dead the two guys who had raped his 10 y.o. daughter, left her for dead and the ensuing court case. We both enjoyed it very much. Samuel L Lewis, Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughy were in it. A great story.

Warm Days & No Rain!

This morning the pool was a gorgeous 25 degrees so after a bike ride it was just wonderful to flop around in the water for 10 minutes or so. It has now been so long since we had even a drop of rain, the pool water level needs topping up from the hose and the front lawn now crinkles under your feet! It is now 4 weeks since we had any rainfall over 7 mls.

As some of you know I need to be careful with my back. Every now and again it goes into spasms and causes me pain and grief! It has been perfect for several months now and yet I have continued to do all the things I shouldn't, mow lawns, vacuum the house/pool, lift heavy loads, brew beer etc. Then Saturday afternoon all I did was stand up from a chair and turn. I felt like I had been shot in the lower back.

Several inflammatory tablets later I was at least able to get around again. Each day it gets a little better but a trip for me to the Chiropractor has been booked for this afternoon.

Trish was flat out all weekend with another Craft Fair. As a Committee Member she was on duty for much of the time. She put a few things 'on sale' and has made around $150 for the weekend into her own pocket. This will pay for the materials she used with a little left over as compensation for the hours of work which went into it all.

Still not much to download from the net. I am really not interested in "Zombies Apocalypse" which scores 4.5 from Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB). Generally I only download movies which are 7.0 or better.

A movie we did enjoy during the week was "The Devil's Double", the story of Uday Hussein, one of Saddam's sons. A guy had been used as the Uday's double and was used to front the press or deliver speeches in dangerous areas while Uday remained in the safety of his own well fortified home. Uday is probably best remembered as a sex fiend in Iraq!

Not A Lot Of News

The photo to the left really says it all! Great days with temps in the high 20's, a little breezy but usually that is the sea breeze blowing in from the north-east.

Today was spent with a little downloading of movies and TV shows. It is almost the end of my 'month' and I have plenty of bandwidth left. A TV Series called Homeland is very popular in the USA right now and "Metacritic" (great website) gives it a very good score. I grabbed the first 6 episodes this morning and swapped them over to the new media player.

This morning I had my ride, a quick swim and then bottled my beer. It was perfect for bottling and got all my beer supplies back to normal. The fridge is well stocked and my supplies in the garage are back to 'normal'.

I am not a fan of Facebook but I kind of keep an eye on it about once a month. I spotted one of my friends from Melbourne had Glenn Lewis as a "friend". That name rang a bell with me. It goes back around 15 years I guess but Glenn was from the USA and attended an International School to School Experience Conference in Lucknow India. I was the delegate representing Australian ISSE schools.

It was Glenn who accompanied me when we were shown around Lucknow with Lt Col Percy Swing. Percy was an ex "Gurkha" officer and was working for the 'school' in India as an aide to the school principal, and had been charged with showing Glenn and me the sights of Lucknow. It was pretty hot so after a share of ancient buildings it was time for Percy to show us a spot where we could get a cool "Kingfisher" or two.

He took us to the Pink Pussy Cat Bar in Lucknow. I ordered three beers for us. Percy declined saying he was working and it wouldn't be right. We convinced him that the Australian tradition was when you were offered a beer you took it and joined 'the shout'. From that moment onwards we were all best mates. It was no longer "Lt Col Swing", now it was Percy, Les and Glenn!

A few days later Glenn and I were invited to Percy's home for a meal with Percy and his delightful wife. It was a wonderful night, a great meal and a friendship I will treasure for ever!

If my memory serves me right, Glenn and I travelled back to New Delhi by overnight train, another story that is!

Glenn and I have exchanged messages on Facebook so we will see what develops!

Looks Wet & Wild In Victoria

I had a Public Community Meeting to Chair on Monday night and we had around 50 people in attendance. There were a couple of contentious items on the Agenda which sparked some lively (if not inane) argument.

People naturally loved it and it was great to have a couple of people come up to me later and congratulate me on the manner in which the meeting was conducted. I must admit it took a little time to get to sleep that night.

Still warm sunny (and dry) days as the photo here of our very dry front lawn shows. We have a top forecast of 27 degrees today. We badly need a drop of rain, unlike Melbourne which seems to be getting lashings of it today.

We no longer bother watering the front lawn, instead we top the pool up a little during these dry periods of time. The pool will need another 15 minute top up tomorrow but hopefully storms and showers over the weekend will fill it right up again.

We caught up with another couple late yesterday afternoon for 'drinks'. They have been here on the Coast for around 12 months and Ian has joined the Community Association to help out and get to meet new people. It was a lot of fun and we shall be catching up with them again.

Everything else is going along as expected, daily bike rides, morning swims in the pool and then there is plenty of cricket on Pay TV for me to watch. We even have the Australia vs Sth Africa series live on Pay TV tonight.

I even found if you go to the Foxsports website, click on the cricket link and eventually through to Domestic Cricket and "Live Streaming" you watch the Sheffield Shield matches live on your PC. The picture isn't the best but still it is better than nothing.

Bottles were washed yesterday and I have bottling on the agenda for tomorrow.

All Quiet On The Northern Front

We have had lovely warmish days with temps around 26 or 28 degrees. This morning the pool was around 23+ degrees so OK for a quick swim after my bike ride. We could do with an inch or two of rain though. Warmer weather and no rain means the pool water evaporates a little more quickly

It hasn't been busy up this way at all, just the everyday humdrum of checking out what is available for download off the net and a visit to my 'usual' web sites. I updated some things on the BeCA website I look after as well.

I put a new brew on Thursday. The rubber seal between the lid and the barrel has gone out of shape so it doesn't fully seal to the whole 100%.

This makes little or no difference to the brew, it just means that it will need to be bottled as soon as it is ready!

Computer Club was busy yesterday as usual sorting out upgrading AVG, how to copy photos to a CD, how can I do this or that.

I spent a fair bit of time showing one chap who was keen to learn about getting movies off the net. I pointed him to a website I had put together for some good basic knowledge. You can see it HERE.

I did have a call from one of the older Computer Club members last night regarding a call she had received from "Microsoft" earlier that night. She had asked they call her back in 15 minutes after she had finished eating her meal. I managed to put her mind at rest saying it was a 'scam'. They tell you your computer is infected and if you pay money there and then they will fix it for you remotely! She was most thankful ... and relieved!

I caught up with one of the new BeCA Committee members for drinks Friday afternoon. They are relatively new to the coast and finding it a little difficult to get to know people. It was pleasant. Trish and I will most likely pop around there Tuesday afternoon for an hour or two.

Two doors up had a party last night. It was pretty noisy around here. Fortunately it was a coolish night (around 18 degrees) so we were able to shut the place up and escape the worst of it. Perhaps it would have been nice had we been warned. The worst can be the music's thump, thump, thump of the base but the music they played last night wasn't that sort of music. We locked the place up so any noise we could hear was incidental. There are benefits to being a bit deaf after all!

A Quiet Cup Day In Queensland

There is a bit of sun about today but not warm enough to see me jump in the pool. I even got some rain drops on the glasses this morning as I headed off on my daily bike ride. With a threatening sky I took a slightly shorter route. By the time I finished 11 or so k's the sky had cleared and everything was beginning to warm up.

I spent a bit of time on the BeCA website adding another post and had a quick check out of what movies there are to download. I am afraid movies such as "Apocalypse Zombies" don't do a lot for me. But that seems to be the standard fare available for download right now. No wonder I grab a heap of TV Series off the ABC's iView.

On stinking hot days we put an umbrella up in the 'back corner'. If you have a few people around you need to 'jockey' for position in some shade. We are considering buying a reasonable quality 3m x 3m "Gazebo" to set up in the back corner.

We took a few minutes this afternoon and checked out our local Bunnings and saw this on display.

It looked 'huge' in the store but we found it would fit OK. It needs to fit in over the pool filter cover so we need the larger 3 metre size.

The possible remaining hassle is that it takes 2 people to set it up. If we had a thunder storm beginning to rattle in like we do in this part of the world it would be great if it could be partially dismantled by one person. Not so sure this is the case with this model.

It seems pretty solid though and has all these supports in the roof to hold it up. It may well be a 2 person job to get it down. I would need to fasten it to the fence on two sides in case of windy weather. Velcro straps would probably do that job though.

After measuring things up it seems this model is most likely the one we will go for. It will give us plenty of shade on those very hot days.

I could then set the old umbrella up over the semi circle section of the pool and offer some shade for that area as well. Got to keep the home brew out of the sun!

During the afternoon we took 45 minutes and enjoyed the 2011 Melbourne Cup on TV. It was an exciting race this year with the winner getting over the line by a nose hair!
